We've come a long way since the time of the caveman when it comes to telling time. Starting with the sundial and on down into watches. It may have been man's desire for luxury that made it possible for us to have watches today.
Early clockwork was made by hand, and even though those that made the earliest watches were very skilled craftsmen, the watches were still much bigger and much less accurate than our watches today. In fact, most people still relied on the sundial to tell time, even though they carried a watch. Watches were a sign of luxury and those that wore them did so as a sign of wealth. If those of that era didn't desire that symbol of luxury, the watch may have died out.
Today, most people carry a watch for function more than fashion, but fashion is one of the reasons we have watches today. There is no reason that today, wear watches that are functional, and luxurious. We can be in fashion and still rely on our watches to tell perfect time. And as we do so, let us not forget why that watch is on our arm, and the era when everyone who had one, truly wore luxury watches.
